Wildlife Ranger

Dennington, Suffolk, IP13

Wildlife Ranger

The employer

A progressive arable estate committed to balancing productive farming with conservation, ensuring that we farm in a way that enhances biodiversity and supports the long-term health of our land.
We are actively involved in habitat restoration projects, including supporting the recovery of English partridge and turtle dove populations and improving wild bird and pollinator habitats. Our conservation efforts extend to responsible deer management and fostering a thriving ecosystem within a working farm landscape.

The job

As Wildlife Ranger you will be at the heart of our conservation strategy, working hands-on to shape the future of wildlife stewardship on the estate. You will be responsible for implementing wildlife and habitat management practices, ensuring compliance with agri-environment schemes, and carrying out practical conservation work. The role includes hands-on habitat management, assisting with educational visits, wildlife monitoring, responsible pest and deer control, and occasional farm support. This is a practical, hands-on role, ideal for someone who enjoys working outdoors and wants to make a tangible impact on conservation within a commercial farming environment.

Wildlife & Habitat Management
- Maintain and enhance habitats, including wild bird cover, pollen and nectar plots, and bumblebee areas.
- Implement agri-environment scheme requirements, ensuring compliance through practical land management rather than paperwork.
- Carry out grass margin cutting and mowing of conservation headlands.
- Conduct supplementary feeding for wild birds and other species.
- Monitor wildlife populations and biodiversity trends across the farm.
- Assess hedgerows for condition and assist with planting new hedges to improve habitat connectivity.
- Support deer and vermin control in line with best practices and legal requirements.

Community Engagement & Access Management
- Assist with educational visits, helping schools and other groups understand local conservation efforts.
- Manage controlled public access to conservation areas.
- Organise and oversee occasional family wild game bird shoots.

Farm Support
- Assist with the establishment of conservation areas, working alongside the farm team.
- Provide tractor driving support, particularly during harvest.
