The employer
The Tollemache Estates represent a collection of largely land and property-based assets in Suffolk and Cheshire, owned and operated by Edward and Sophie Tollemache. The family home, Helmingham Hall, sits within 5,600 acres in Suffolk comprising of farming, property, and a growing events, hospitality, & leisure offering which has helped to diversify the estate’s income.
In addition, the Peckforton Estate in Cheshire spans some 2,700 acres comprising an organic dairy operation, residential properties, and visitor attractions.
The job
As part-time Finance Director you will report to the Estates Director and Owner to provide strategic financial leadership and oversight across the Estates, combining long-term strategic planning with hands-on oversight of financial operations, ensuring robust controls, accurate reporting, and sustainable growth.
You will work with existing finance employees and Heads of Department to improve the accuracy of the accounting function across the portfolio, preparing high-level summary financial overviews by entity and business unit, whilst still having the ability to drill down into the detail.
Responsibilities will also include:
- Review and develop financial planning and reporting to make it appropriate for Senior Management decision making
- Implement a robust monthly management accounts routine which is adhered to, e.g. monthly journals and checking inter-entity nets to £nil etc.
- Agree the phased annual budgets in consultation with the owners, the Estates Director and Heads of Department, for sign off by the Estate’s Trustees/Directors
- Implement a suite of weekly headline figures for cash flow management
- Review Aged Debtor reporting for each entity
- Review Aged Creditor reporting for each entity
- Review VAT recovery and process
- Prepare sound draft year end accounts for the accountants to prepare statutory accounts
- Financial analysis as required, with a strong steer on identifying additional revenue streams and potential off-site investment opportunities that could add value, both in terms of income generation and capital appreciation
- Identify grant funding opportunities for key areas of the business, working with the Estates Director and Heads of Department
- Oversee payroll processes, invoicing and treasury (cash management), ensuring compliance
- Develop cashflow reporting, including the production of high-level 5-year summaries, considering interplay with debt and disposals.
What you'll need
Significant senior finance experience, ideally across estates, property, hospitality, or agriculture.
Strong commercial acumen with the ability to balance tradition and innovation.
Experience of managing multi-entity and diversified organisations.
Excellent communicator, able to influence and support both owners and managers.
Proven ability to improve financial performance and strengthen controls.
An ability to present at a high level and exhibit a meticulous attention to detail
Experience with VAT partial exemption, agricultural subsidies, and estate trusts desirable
