The employer

A private garden of some 3-4 acres, including a 0.5 acre walled garden.

The job

This is a fantastic opportunity for a passionate gardener to help shape and develop a historic garden in east Suffolk. With a sunny walled garden, greenhouses, ponds, lawns and centuries old fruit trees, this is a fulfilling role and a ‘job for life’ for the right candidate.

The role includes sole responsibility for seed sowing, propagating, planting of beds and pruning, mowing and care of large lawn areas (with a ride-on mower), tending to fruit trees, including indoor peach trees, spraying of weeds and nettles, chopping firewood and replenishing stock in the house as well as basic maintenance of garden machinery and other duties from time to time. While it is not necessary to have completed formal horticultural or estate management training, a good knowledge and experience of nurturing plants and a willingness to learn are essential.

What you'll need

At least 3 years’ experience as a professional gardener
Good experience and strong knowledge of the health and care of plants
An excellent timekeeper who is reliable and trustworthy
Ability to take instruction to complete necessary tasks, while remaining proactive, able to prioritise own workload
A ‘can do’ attitude and physical fitness, able to work outdoors in all weathers
Experience using chainsaws and other horticultural machinery
Chainsaw Maintenance/Crosscutting and PA1/PA6 strongly desired
A Full UK driving licence and your own transport.

The estate is based close to Wickham Market, a short distance from the A12

What you'll receive

£28,000 - £30,000 per annum dependent on experience
Long-term opportunity with direct employment by the family
Working Monday to Friday between 8am-4:30pm with half an hour lunch break
28 days holiday including bank holidays
Stunning working location in the Suffolk countryside
