The job
As Assistant Grower you will be responsible for supporting the Grower with the growing, care and maintenance of the company’s horticultural products within the current research facility, and future commercial vertical farm. You'll support the Grower with the application of technical procedures, timing and metering devices that control frequency, amount and type of nutrient applications; regulate humidity, ventilation, temperature and amount of light; and dispense fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides and fungicides. Additionally, you will
- Monitors, tests, evaluates and records plant conditions, plant development, environmental and growing conditions, fruit yield, fruit quality and size and brix levels
- Work with the Grower, Head Grower and Plant Scientist/Agronomist to oversee changes in humidity, moisture and temperature and cultivation procedures to ensure conformance with quality control standards.
- Remove substandard or diseased plants to maintain quality standards.
- Work with the Grower to determine rates of fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides and fungicides as required by the crops and applies them.
- Compile inventory of needed growing supplies such as fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and fungicides.
- Maintain a current knowledge of growing techniques and technologies.
- Assist the Grower to maintain a Risk register and manages the COSHH and BRC food safety protocols ensuring that staff abide by these protocols at all times.
What you'll need
Ideally a degree in Horticulture or related field and 1 to 2 years of related work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
Experience of growing strawberries in open field or, preferably, in a controlled environment setting such as greenhouse or indoor farm, is desirable
Understand the use of nutrients, electrical conductivity and pH meter.
Knowledge of ventilation, light conditions, temperature and humidity.
Knowledge and ability to identify major plant groups and be aware of their culture and growth traits with particular experience in the growing and cultivation of strawberries in a controlled environment.
Ability to calculate figures amounts, proportions, percentages and volume in relation to the application of fertilizers, chemicals and water.
Ability to read, analyse, and interpret reports, regulations and technical procedures.
Ability to use a PC to write reports, business correspondence, and procedural manuals.
Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from Grower, Head Grower and from employees.
Ability to collect data and maintain records of essential growing procedures, attributes, results, growth rates, fruit quality and diseases and prevention measures applied.
Ability to define and highlight problems to the Grower and to assist in developing solutions to resolve these.
Helpful, friendly, and cooperative.
Where you'll be based
The facility is based in Great Blakenham, on the outskirts of Ipswich
What you'll receive
£30,000 - £35,000 per annum depending on experience.
Working Monday-Friday 8am-5pm with 30 minute lunch
33 days annual leave, inclusive of bank holidays
Discretionary annual bonus, to be determined by the Board, based on company performance for the preceding year.
