Shop Manager

The employer

Reuben’s is a modern butcher, deli and bottle shop in Melton, Suffolk.

We take a cook-focused approach to butchery, pairing high-quality, ethically sourced local meat with a carefully curated range of artisanal produce from independent makers across the UK and Europe.

Alongside the deli and butcher counter, we’ve built a strong wine offering with a focus on low-intervention, organic and classic producers, sourced through respected importers including St. John Wines. The shop sits somewhere between a modern East London deli, neighbourhood butcher and wine store — thoughtful, design-led and deeply food-focused.

We also run regular food truck events from our Airstream trailer and collaborate with restaurants, producers and chefs across Suffolk and beyond. Reuben’s has become a well-loved fixture in the local community with a loyal customer base and a reputation for quality, knowledge and service.

The job

As Shop Manager you will lead the day-to-day running of the business, a senior operational role with real responsibility and autonomy. You’ll oversee the shop floor, manage stock and systems, support and develop the team, and help maintain the standards and pace of a busy independent food business.
You will be proactive, commercially aware and calm under pressure — someone who takes ownership, solves problems quickly and genuinely enjoys working as part of a strong team.

Responsibilities will also include:
- Stock ordering, management and supplier coordination
- Maintaining excellent shop standards across retail, deli and bottle shop
- Team leadership, training and onboarding
- Managing rotas and holiday approvals
- Delivering knowledgeable, high-level customer service
- Operating bakery systems and managing critical control points
- Sourcing new and interesting products aligned with the Reuben’s brand
- Budget management and wastage reporting
- Ensuring health & safety and food compliance standards are maintained
- Supporting logistics and organisation for external events and food truck operations
