The Canteen at The Old Hospital is a community café using seasonal, locally-sourced and foraged ingredients to make delicious dishes, cakes, cordials and condiments from scratch.

Housed in a restored Victorian cottage hospital, the modern indoor space is bathed in natural light, while the tranquil outdoor seating area is surrounded by bee-friendly gardens. They also host a number of projects that support the community, including events like the popular Community Lunch and Family Tea Club.

The job

As Lead Chef you will be responsible for the food & beverage offering at this delightful community café that has attracted the attention of the national press on several occasions. You'll have full menu autonomy within the brief of healthy, ethically-sourced, plant-based (not exclusively), and homemade food using locally-sourced and foraged ingredients. You'll devise menus on a monthly basis, be responsible for liaising with suppliers and making orders, as well as forging relationships with new suppliers. Rotas are handled by management and the team is well staffed, so no concerns of trying to recruit chefs! The role is day times only and you'll get most Sundays off too. This is the perfect role for someone with a passion for sustainability and ethically sourced food who values making a difference to the community

What you'll need

Experienced chef in a restaurant or café setting
Passionate about promoting healthy and ethically sourced food options
Desire to make everything from scratch
Commitment to sourcing and using the very best local produce and foraged goods

Where you'll be based

The Canteen is based close to Southwold town centre in a lovingly restored Edwardian hospital building.

What you'll receive

- £32,000 - £35,000 per annum dependent on experience
- Generous tips equating to £4k-£5k per annum
- Full time employment, working 40 hours per week on a rota basis
- Working 7:30am-3:30pm - no evenings
- Sunday and Monday off (one week in four working Sunday with Saturday off)
- 28 days annual leave
